A place for all things fishy, mostly by Ian

As a kid I occasionally fished on holiday but I have just rediscovered fishing. I guess it's about 25 years since I last fished...

The inspiration came from the hordes of perch and roach that can be clearly seen in the marina where Mon Bateau is moored. "How hard can it be?" I thought. So I got bought myself a cheap rod and on my 37th birthday I sat down and dangled a few maggots...

Ian's First Fish - June 25th 2004 001.jpg (80120 bytes) Bingo! - the first fish. A perch. Not big, probably not clever, but incredibly satisfying.
I continued and caught a few more before the perch figured out that this particular corner of the marina was not a good place to be.

The following week it looked like I was all set to repeat the pattern. I was just reeling in my second perch of the day when a black torpedo shot out from underneath the boat and attached itself to the perch. In pike terms, it was quite small but in "Ian terms" it was quite a surprise. I bravely battled the monster from the deep whilst Jo fumbled the landing net. Suddenly, disaster! The pike sussed out that something was wrong and let go of the perch. Not to be beaten I waggled the perch in an entirely unrealistic manner and the pike, in a magnificent feat of stupidity, grabbed hold once again. This time we were ready and netted it. No problemo.
